Gujranwala is an industrial city in the north east of the Punjab province. It is the seventh largest city in Pakistan with a population of approximately 2,661,360. It shares borders with Ghakhar Mandi and some small towns and villages. Due to extensive road and rail links, the city has flourished within the manufacturing and agricultural markets. The city is on the Grand Trunk (G.T) Road, which allows logistical connections to the provincial capitals such as Peshawar and Lahore and also to the capital of Pakistan Islamabad.
Objectives
The key objectives of this study are to:
- Define the number of high-occupancy vehicles (HOV) routes and passenger volume on each route
- Carryout HOV route operative in Gujranwala city, buses presently plying and optimal requirement on each route
- Asses Cost-Benefit analysis of each route and subsidy (if any) required making the bus operation viable
- Identify the impact of illegal transport (if any) on each HOV route and suggestions to improve illegal transport
- Condition of buses with photographs. Plan for refurbishment of existing buses
- Propose induction of new CNG air-conditioned buses under Punjab Government Incentive schemes

After detail analysis of the existing transport condition and future demand in the city, TPU suggested a number of long and short-term measures to reduce illegal operations. Similarly, it also proposed strategies for urban transport company to improve the quality of service, and revenues.
