Zoning serves as a key tool to implement public transport accessibility plans for people belonging to different socio-economic groups in all communities. All District Regional Transport Authorities (DTRA) have to draw zoning plans for their respective areas as per Motor Vehicle Law 253-A section (f) which states that “the regional transport authority shall indicate and earmark zones, and the requisite number of C & D class stands in a particular zone, with the approval of the Government." TPU has completed zoning for Gujranwala, Lahore and Khanewal. Establishment of zones helped local authorities to control land use and Plan growth. Furthermore, it aided to control misuse of uncontrolled private development and formulate future growth scenarios. During the visit, TPU team observed some discrepancies in the proposed zoning though field study and spatially displayed the information collected. The maps generated in Geographical Information System helped city officials to eliminate those discrepancies.
